As I was thinking of a new blog idea to post, I pulled out my iPhone and began browsing my E! Online mobile app for inspiration. And then it hit me....

People, including myself, download mobile apps to get realtime updates on celebrities' personal lives. Our society cares so much about the intimate details of celeb's day-to-day activities that we use our phones to keep track of them. That way, no matter where we are, or what's going on, or what we're doing, we can check up on our favorite celebrities, see what they're wearing, what they're doing, and who they're with. Let the copycatting begin!

I decided to go to the App Store on my iPhone and see just how many apps were dedicated to celebrity lives. I typed in "celebrity news" in the search bar, and there were 201 results.

...201 apps dedicated to providing people like us with the latest celebrity gossip. And you're tellin' me we're not a bunch of celebrity stalkers?

Movies about Celebrities' Lives

Many celebs create movies about their lives. These movies usually attract large audiences who are curious about the personal details of their favorite celebrities. I remember when the Katy Perry movie, "Part Of Me," came out, everyone was so excited to see it because it told details of her recent divorce with Russell Brand. 

What gets me is that people are so interested in these movies featuring the life stories of these celebrities. Why do we care so much about these peoples' personal lives? 

Justin Beiber came out with a similar type of movie, "Never Say Never," highlighting his life leading up to one of his biggest concerts at Madison Square Garden. It showed the trials and tribulations he went through to get ready for the concert, as well as footage from the actual event itself. Justin Beiber fans were counting down the days until this movie was released. 

My question is, what sort of gain is there from these movies? I mean, yeah, we know more about the private lives of these celebrities, but what does that knowledge do for us? Why are we as a society so interested in what celebrities do and why they do what they do? Why do we even care about the details of Katy Perry's divorce or what Justin Bieber does to prepare for his concerts?

"Stars -- They're Just Like Us!"

Us Magazine has a section, "Stars -- They're Just Like Us!" that highlights the ways celebrities are just like us "little people." This particular image above illustrates that because this celebrity is using a shopping basket at the store, he is just like us! 

My thoughts about this image are this: of course this star uses a shopping basket when at the store! Why wouldn't he? Do we really hold celebrities in such high prestige that we would expect this man pictured to NOT be using a basket at the grocery store?

We as a society, as I've pointed out several times, have a strange obsession with celebrities, and view them as if they're a different species. What's even worse? We need articles like this to remind us that celebrities are just people, too.

Getting the Celebrity Look For Less

This article about "The Look For Less!" was featured in People Magazine. Each edition of People Magazine has this section. Celebrity clothing is typically extravagant and expensive, and most of us celebrity copycats can only dream of ever wearing their exact outfits. This section gives "people like us" the opportunity to dress like celebs, but spend within our budget. 

 The fact that a section like this exists is proof enough that we as a society have an obsession with the way celebrities are dressing, among several of their other actions. We celebrity copycats just can't get enough of the celebrity look, huh?
